Hanoi: Heavy rains have caused flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas in northern Vietnam, leaving four people dead, four missing and at least nine injured as of the morning of July 19, 2026. Lai Chau province was the hardest hit. Heavy rains from the night of July 16 to the morning of July 17 caused flash floods and landslides in several villages in Muang Thanh commune. The affected areas include Chit village, Nam Sang village, Group 11 area and several other locations. Floods flowing down from the mountains have hit homes, roads, farmland and power lines. Authorities reported that 21 houses collapsed, 144 houses were damaged and 64 houses were affected by floods and landslides in Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Dien Bien and Son La provinces. 275 families have been urgently evacuated from areas at risk of floods and landslides. About 696 hectares of rice and other crops have been damaged, while many livestock have died. In Mueang Thanh commune, several houses were swept away and buried under the mud. National Road 32, National Road 279 and several village roads were blocked by landslides, making it difficult for rescue operations and the transportation of supplies to the affected areas. The Ministry of Public Security has dispatched more than 10,000 police and related personnel, as well as more than 200 vehicles, to search for missing people, rescue people and clear the mud. The Vietnam National Center for Meteorological Forecasting has warned that the northern mountainous region is still facing heavy rains, flash floods and more landslides. Local authorities are continuing operations to search for the four missing people and evacuate people from high-risk areas.
